Um, summer readings really went really well this year. A lot of people participate. It was a lot of fun. Um, we had Ed the Wizard. He did two different programs. He was amazing. I would definitely have him again. And he was very reasonably priced. Um, we had a Christmas program booked. Um, an actor's going to come and uh telling re dramatic retellings of a child's Christmas in Wales, Gift of the

Magi, and some excerpts from the Christmas Carol. Uh that's December 19th at 2 p.m. Um one of our dogwood trees I think has to eye. It looks really bad.

It is the one right on the end. So, um there is a quote in Joseph's quote for replacing it, but I think we should wait because I think if we do it now, it's not going to make it.

One year warranty on the trees.

He's going to talk to and find out.

They should be.

But I think planting it now would be a bad idea because it was hard enough keeping those alive. So, um the others are they don't look amazing, but they're alive. So, um so far, um the first week and a half of school has gone well with the after school kids. Um everyone's parking in the lot, but there's really I saw the letter that they sent to the parents and it said in three different places, do

not park in the library.

How is it going? It's there. There's cars there. So, do they they park there for the day or they park there week?

No, they got there at like I saw I saw 12:30 the other day.

They get there earlier at the school, but here they usually get there.

But when does school release 12?

Yeah, they're supposed to.

So yeah, I I have no idea at this point, but you know sense to have a sign for your parking lot like for employees and volunteers only.

We have signs. We have signs for the library parking, don't we?

Because I know when I went out the other day for volunteering, there was somebody out there waiting for their child. Yeah, it is overflow parking.

And for Well, you probably feel a little hidden if you over there, too. So, you feel like you might get away with behind where you guys parked.

No. No, it was actually Connecticut car, I think.

Might have been a grandparent or something.

Um, the sign, the no trucks and buses sign has helped a lot with the trucks.

Um, at least over the summer. We'll see once the sports start again whether the buses pay attention. But so far, I haven't seen I don't think large truck backing up or trying to back up in there since they so I think that's working at least.

Um and then I got invited to be a guest reader at the elementary school for the um the first grade classes when they they come over every year in the spring to get their cards. So I'd spoken with some of the teachers last year and they wanted to do something kind of throughout the year so the kids would know me by the time they came to get their cards and um so that should be

really fun. I'm looking forward to that.

I'm hoping to start next month and Yep. That's that's it.

Can I ask about this because I love this with your um note about the um the speech language.

Is that someone who's uh like works in the schools now or just Yeah, she does work. I don't think she's there like during the school day. She works after school with um some kids she said, but she is a speech language pathologist and she helps with the early intervention in reading I believe. So the back when I was in school it was phonics but they call it decodables now which is I think it's mostly the order

that they teach things in. It's still like the same sort of long and short vowels and everything but the order they teach them in is different.

So she had I think so basically um so she had um volunteered she had contacted me to come in um she her son goes to elementary school so after she drops him off she could stop by. So, she spin once and went through she pulled a couple of older um like sets we had that she's ever really out of date and we had mostly gotten rid of the set at this

point anyway. There was only a few left.

And then um she picked out all the decodables because I have bought a few.

There's not a lot specifically to buy.

And I have them um labeled now and so she helped with that. So, we have a star and she's going to help me um you know find out good um publishers for them and things like that so we can start working on that because we have had parents ask about it in the past and it's not something we know a lot about. So that's really helpful to us.

Uh so I was u interviewed um by a person at Real Simple. um she had seen our Tik Toks and um just wanted to know if any librarians were available to give recommendations or um fall most anticipated anticipated um books and I said sure.

I gave her some a couple and she used most of them.

Oh, I emailed her all this stuff. Yeah.

Where was she? Do you know she in New York? Um, probably she does people and real simple.

It was It was very nice.

It was a really good art.

I think it would be nice if you got something to display like like a a picture of the magazine and then these quotes to have displayed.

Probably going to be in the print one because we have a subscription.

Yeah, I like this increase in um social media followers is pretty pretty good. I mean from 1209 to 1544 for Facebook.

Do you attribute that to anything or just kind of um a couple Tik Tok videos that we did recently? Um Clever the Yeah. Okay.

So, how does I'm not on Tik Tok. I'm on the other Facebook.

Um because they go back and forth.

They'll like So, you're one social media in the big Facebook too, Instagram, too.

And they follow us on both of them.

But Tik Tok has grown a lot. Facebook is still like the highest one we have, but probably speaks to the population probably. Yeah.

Yes, I know. I It was a really long meeting. Um it was a lot of information.

So, um you could read all the details here, but um the yeah, I mean they had a really good month for donations if you noticed. Um that was that was pretty because even after they gave the 40,000 donation, they still have 53 in their account. So, um and then they that's even before this book sale. So, they're really happy about that and they their two summer programs are really well attended. Um,

I didn't get a chance to go to either of them because I had my my family home and it was chaos. But anyway, um, but they had got a lot of good feedback as well.

And I guess they said the the actress who did that revolution of her own, they get a lot of questions from kids.

Apparently, they said there's a lot of like she stayed she said she would have stayed for just answering the question.

So, um, they're definitely, you know, hopefully that she can do another program.

I heard from a few different people too who said it was excellent.

Yeah. So, they're really happy about that. Um, and then they also made motions to um, you know, well, Bonnie was there, so she she knows, but to reimburse for your craft supplies for the summer, for the bookcase, for your toy lending library, which I can't wait to see.

Looks like a truck or something.

Um, and also for the the Christmas program, they're going to they're going to cover the cost of that, which is which is great. Um, and of course the rest of the discussion was all about the book sale because I was just before the book sale.

So that's going on right now until till Saturday. So hopefully that that does really well. But it's funny because I had volunteered to help sore on Thursday and um she emailed me that morning, we're all set because I guess so many people come came on Tuesday and Wednesday that they were able to get them all on the shelves. So whoever was here, I'm sure some of you were.

Amazing. Yeah, I was there too saying it was packed with volunteers.

Yeah. So, that's that's great. They had a lot of help.

Um, and I one of the the the discussion really was more a lot about their membership is steady but stagnant and it doesn't reflect as much of a percentage of library patrons as they'd like. So, it's like two I think it's like 260 I think there. Um, and it's kind of stayed that way for a couple years. So that they they had some discussion about how they get more word

out, how can they get more membership of Fowl, how more donations, which is always the case for any organization.

Yeah. I mean, they do have social media.

They have the same that the library does. Um, and they they very active in that. But again, it's just how Yeah.

Do they track their social media?

Yeah. Yeah, they do. They have um I think it's Nicole that does their website and their all that stuff and and she's pretty good about that. So, one of the ideas was to set up a table at Le um to get members. Um but again, that's up to Le if if they will do that. So, we we'll see. Um, on a side note, I got an email from someone else I know from

another committee that I guess there's someone retiring soon and they want to either contribute financially or volunteer strongly for the library. So, soon as I hear more, I'll let you know.

But I I put him in touch with super as well. So, that could be do a donation. Would it be better to go through friends or library?

That's what I was told once.

I think for Yeah, I think it's That's why I gave him Sue Branos because I think if it's funneled through the air, he can kind of Yeah.

There's more work involved when he goes through town, right? That's what I mean. It would definitely That's why I wanted to put him right away in touch with Fowl and not the town because I think it's it would be, you know, better to to have him go directly through there. So, we'll see.

um was it the only other you know issue is which we've talked about at Bonnie is the majong thing. So this is how that goes with the parking.

Um but other than that yeah there was no way to make changes after that.

What was the um first library video July 17th? It was um the two so Sue being interviewed quote unquote um by one of the other members.

Um he did a great job. It was really good. It was actually it was it was really it was excellent.

Um, Joseph Englesby had contacted me about cleaning up the slopes and around the amphitheater before we have the bench decation ceremony and around the library itself um those gardens. So, he sent an estimate in does include the dog wood replacing that, but I would personally think we should wait to do that part. But for the clean up, we have Yeah, everything else it would be the um the

slope between us and the school that's huge mess right now. Um the gardens in front of the library to the side and then right around the amphitheater where there's roses and stuff.

I think if we have the money, we should do it. The town hasn't been able to get up here because they don't know the paving right?

Yeah. How much was the estimate?

Um, it's $3,526, but the tree was in there, so I think it would take out like around three or something.

Yeah. Oh, so yeah, it would take out maybe 17.

The town can when he's done the town can still come up stone.

Update on the HVA system that got denied for this year from the town and for the grants. So I have requested and I'm receiving a quote for a normal system, not the $500,000 system, but more like a $100,000 system to basically replace what we have with existing new stuff.

So the guy that prepared the system for the town is preparing something for me for that for what we want. So my guess is that'll probably be in 100 to $120,000.

Once we get that, I'd like to make a motion that we submit it to Menon Foundation.

When do you anticipate getting that?

Well, I saw him yet Friday. He said Monday, but I think he was being the next Monday.

So, do you think that they will allow us to do that then? The the town won't care.

I personnel committee. The only thing I have to say is that Bonnie spoke to us about ch a change in the schedule and the three of us approved it. It's just temporary.

And just to go over numbers and um you know, the the real concern is the utilities. You know, that we just don't get enough money from the town.

Everything went up last year.

And then you know, you have to dip into other funds. And um I kind of started to do an analysis. Um there's very little It's funny because it would be nice if there was a line in the general ledger that said water.

You know, because it would be so much easier to track it that way because it's under repairs and maintenance. There are lots of other things that go, not lots, but everything else.

Yeah.

Janitorial supplies go there, too.

No, no, there is a custodial supplies line and an office supplies line and repair and maintenance. But um it's uh it would it would just be easier I think all around if it was kept separately. I would have to think the town keeps it separately.

I I don't know. I mean we don't have access to before.

What is it?

We've never had a water issue before.

Um and the water is spendy.

Yeah. Um, I I looked at I pulled you guys think I won't think I'm great, but I pull the field cards for all the public, the high school, the old high school, May Humber, but I have to think that the well out here is strictly for the library and the high school.

Is it also for the elementary?

It's for the elementary or the high school with us.

Oh, okay. Because if you look at like square footage wise, we are 5% of what the high school is. Yeah. Now, I didn't include the elementary school in that.

So, that will bring that number down.

The old high school is included in that, too.

No, but they're on the monitoring system.

The high school wells gets monitored by state requirements.

I have a whole package of a year and a half worth of the bills.

And it has on there what the breakdown is for the library. They're very intermittent on what they charge to the old high school.

Because on the high schools there's a separate line item on how they break it down. There's a line item for the uh food service. They use a lot of water.

Oh, is that an outside company that does that or It's an outside company.

It's the outside company monitors it and puts the chemicals in it.

And they do all the reporting for the state because the state requires us to do certain corporate report, right? Yeah. I know you have to do a title five certificate annually and um it's I'll give you the copies.

I've been fighting for a while. It's not fair. Yeah, we got this increase in our budget. I mean, we got an increase in cost for the school, but we didn't get an increase in budget, right?

We spent probably $4,500 a month, $4,000 a month. Am I wrong?

No, it's not.

It looks like it's around $400 a month.

It's almost $6,000 a year.

Um, so that's that's our maintenance and repair budget, which I was using is only 3500.

Right. So, well, and also what's interesting and I I mean I we have to delve into this deeper, but there's only one company it seems like Northeastern Water is the only company they have the contract with the town.

So, do they do all the testing of everything is under that umbrella?

Everything.

They do inspect the water here once a month.

So that Yeah. That was the biggest topic that we were because that is a concern and and and it's not in the budget now and we want to make sure Right.

Um there should be a line for utilities and then we have gas, electric, and water.

Yeah. It would make it so much easier gas and electric separately, but we've never we have gas and electric separate lines, but we've never had because it's because of the well water, we've never had a water bill. It's just the testing.

It's not the water itself.

It's not really a utility.

You should be able to get adjusted.

Well, if it's correct like the Route Six water line, that's a utility. They get a bill from West.

It's really no different.

We get a bill from the town for services.

What we use the other thing beside you know we talked to Bonnie about that and about having that as a line item um is when Bonnie proposes her budget to Chris when you go to Chris or whatever that us as a board you know we can vote on it when we get closer to kind of almost write a statement of support for this budget. Um I don't know if we've done that in the p

I'm new to this but I think that would be really great idea if we did that like we support these you know especially if you have to you know and I I strongly think we should do a little bit of an increase because of that you know and the utilities are going to go up the numbers talk if we didn't have any of the grass and stuff we'd be in trouble right state is what right most

and when you do an analysis most of it is currently now coming out of other accounts, right? Yeah.

You know, so we're depleting those accounts, right?

So, okay. All right.

A lot on state aid, but um that's not a guarantee for sure. So, it depends on how much the state allocates to all of those things.

It's not it's a it's a 62% of the town budget is the library budget. So, I think asking for like $6,000 more or$5,000, whatever it ends up being, I think it's going to be it.

So, as I always learned as a child, the worst they can do is say no.

We might also want to consider putting a line item in there for uh plowing.

It'll just make the town think they have to spend this much more if they don't let this town do it.

A couple years ago, go under now.

The town takes care of it now.

Oh, but at one time, a couple years ago, they said they weren't going to do it anymore.

So, we would have had to get someone to do it. That's what I'm saying. If we had a price, it's going to cost us $10,000 a year for plowing.

We asked for that increase. Never mind.

We'll let the talent take care of That's a good idea.

They did hire another person for landscaping. I mean, for cutting grass.

That's why we're getting things done.

I think it's great having these subcommittees where a few people can give like a really granular analysis of good for you have a few cards.

Well, I did that analysis and I was like, "Oh my gosh, we're like this tiny little entity."

And that's just based on square footage.

That's not based on water, toilets, sinks, nothing like that. Yeah. Yeah.

There's a whole formula for how much water is expected to be used based on what you have.

It's a mathematical formula somebody put together. Like in a building, you have 10 bathrooms. You're supposed to have x number of persons per day go to that bathroom so many times.

And it's interesting because the field cards don't show like how many bathrooms, you know, nothing like that.

So, it's very hard to So, I just did it based on square footage, but I know that's not totally realistic.

I have a question. It's um just kind of general. I was in a library elsewhere and they I was talking to the librarian and she said that they have the system of um or organizing books. I don't know if the system is used here or not called genreation.

Um, I don't think I'd ever do it for adults like personally, but I have thought about doing we have talked about doing the J fiction like the middle readers like we did YA and start it that way. I think like picture books, it's going to be too much of a nightmare.

Um, Norton has done it and there's a couple other libraries um you'll see their call numbers. It'll say um there's like seasons and you know things like that. But I think you can get so into the minutia that it's sort of well and my limited experience in filing children's books.

They're kids are pulling them out.

The new staff has such a hard time with I have to tell them like I love that you're working so hard to put these in order but it's going to last the minimum maybe and it's going to get messed up.

The board books especially like I love the initiative but it's sort of a waste of time like you have to you know yeah where did you get this book and like we'll be like almost in the restaurant like it wasn't here. I know it wasn't here, but we're in and that's we try to keep them as fast as we can, but it's a losing and we have to accept that. Right. Right. Right.
